One of the most apparent signs of a mature Christian is his or her ability to hold their tongues when it comes to gossip or judgment of others about nonsensical things.
The temptation for a lot of us to criticize someone on the littlest of things is almost inherent. Talking about someone or verbally being negative is a sin that many have to contend with daily.
One of the simplest exercises that we can do as followers of Christ is to discipline ourselves always to ask the question: “How would Jesus act or respond?”
When we start deriding those around us, it shows a lack of self-control and understanding of what Christ expects us to do or say. It’s up to each one of us to start putting the teachings of Christ ahead of our impulses and lack of control.
The true indicator of a person who has fully embraced Christ and His teachings is a Christian that has the ability to hold their tongue.
The bottom line: Christians hold their tongues and don’t foolishly ridicule and nitpick their neighbors and people around them. We must be wise and follow the example of Christ when confronted with all kinds of different circumstances.
It’s up to us to be the examples of Christ and know when to hold our tongues and when to call out the wicked justly.
Proverbs 11:12 Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue. (NIV)
